General description

Sucrose is an abundant disaccharide produced as the end product of photosynthesis. It is a nonreducing sugar comprising glucose and fructose. Sucrose is obtained from cane sugar and is mostly synthesized in leaves.

Application

Sucrose has been used as a component of vitrification solutions for the freezing, thawing, or heating of embryo/oocytes. It has also been used to create sucrose gradients for the purification of viruses and proteins.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sucrose is the chief sugar transferred in the phloem of most plants. It is used to make density gradients for the separation of cell/organelle. Sucrose can also be used in various enzymatic assays. Additionally, it serves as a supplement in the plant, insect, and bacterial culture media.
