General description

Piperine is a naturally occurring bioactive alkaloid in pepper, which imparts pungency and bitter flavor to it. It has demonstrated health benefits and exhibits therapeutic properties, which include its role as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, immunomodulatory and hepatoprotective agent. The inhibition of drug-metabolizing enzymes in hepatic and pulmonary tissues, and the enhancement of drug bioavailability by this compound are reported. It is also found to play an important role in reducing blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides.
Piperine is an amide isolated from the plant, Piper longum. It is a known inhibitor of hepatic and intestinal glucuronidation. Piperine is found to exhibit pharmacological properties like antitumor, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities.

Application

Piperine may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in:
  • Human plasma using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS).
  • Piper nigrum extract using reversed phase high pressure liquid chromatographic method with UV detection (RP-HPLC-UV).
  • Food products using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD).
