General description

Gadolinium(III) chloride is a white inorganic halide hygroscopic solid soluble in water. Gd3+ species are particularly intriguing because they possess the highest known number of unpaired spins among all elements. The exceptional magnetic properties and symmetry of Gd3+ make it a valuable component in both NMR spectroscopy and MRI applications. It is widely used as a dopant/precursor to enhance the optical and magnetic properties of various materials used in MRI contrast agents, electronic devices, and phosphors.

Application

Gadolinium(III) chloride can be used:
  • As a precursor to synthesize Gd metal nanoparticles.
  • As a dopant to prepare CdSe nanoparticles as a contrast agent for optical and magnetic resonance imaging applications.
  • To prepare Gd-Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether(HMME) phosphors for oxygen sensing.
  • To fabricate radioluminescent silica optical fibers via surface plasma chemical vapor deposition (SPCVD), for magneto-optical devices.

The rare earth elements impact nearly everyone in the world. All of the people living in advanced technological countries and almost all those living in third world countries utilize the rare earths in their everyday living—the car that one drives (gasoline is refined from oil using rare earth catalysts and catalytic converters reduce the polluting emissions from the automotive exhaust), watching the news on TV (the red and green colors in TV screens), the telephones and computers we use to communicate (the permanent magnets in speakers and disc drives), just to name a few examples.

Our team of scientists has experience in all areas of research including Life Science, Material Science, Chemical Synthesis, Chromatography, Analytical and many others.
