General description

Ribavirin is a synthetic guanosine analog, effective against respiratory syncytial virus, several hemorrhagic fever viruses and human immuno deficiency virus.

Application

Ribavirin may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in drug dosage forms by high-pressure liquid chromatographic method.
These Secondary Standards are qualified as Certified Reference Materials. These are suitable for use in several analytical applications including but not limited to pharma release testing, pharma method development for qualitative and quantitative analyses, food and beverage quality control testing, and other calibration requirements.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Antiviral agent used against a wide variety of human viral infections, in particular, chronic hepatitis C, HIV, and adenovirus. Its metabolite, ribavirin 5′-phosphate, is an inhibitor of inosine monophosphate (IMP) dehydrogenase, but many other mechanisms of action are also supported with experimental evidence.
