General description

Nicotinic acid is also known as vitamin B3 or Niacin. It is a water soluble vitamin. Niacin can be either synthesized within the body or can be obtained from dietary sources.

Application

Nicotinic acid has been used:
  • as a component of the MS vitamins stock solution
  • for the detection of siderophores in Escherichia coli bacterial culture
  • as a component of the holidic medium for adult Drosophila .

Biochem/physiol Actions

Niacin is involved in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is used in the adenine triphosphate (ATP) production in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It also decreases hepatic production of very-low density lipoproteins (VLDL), and apolipoprotein B (apo-B). Niacin deficiency leads to pellagra.

Since cholesterol is a water-insoluble molecule it must be packaged for transport within the plasma. The particles that package cholesterol, cholesteryl esters, and triglycerides for transport, are called lipoproteins.
