Biochem/physiol Actions

Mixed NMDA glutamate receptor agonist/antagonist at the polyamine site. Neuroprotective effects have been observed at high concentrations (1 mM), while neurotoxicity is observed at lower concentrations. It enhances agonist effectiveness at the strychnine-insensitive glycine site. Plays a role in cellular proliferation and differentiation; inhibits neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS).

Critical care medicine, 28(4 Suppl), N60-N66 (2000-05-12)
Spermine, a naturally occurring polyamine, is a ubiquitous structural component of all eukaryotic cells. Regenerating tissues produce higher levels of spermine, and injured or dying cells release spermine into the extracellular milieu, so that tissue levels increase significantly at inflammatory

A nano-sized polymer, dextran-spermine (D-SPM), was shown to have the capacity to deliver gene to the lung of mouse via intranasal route. In this study, assessments on the safety profile of D-SPM were performed to complement the gene expression results.

The elimination of spermine, the end product of cellular polyamine, from the retina to the blood across the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) was investigated. The in vivo microdialysis study revealed that the elimination of [(3)H]spermine from vitreous humor after vitreous bolus injection

The natural polyamines (PA), putrescine (PUT), spermidine (SPD) and spermine (SPM) are ubiquitous constituents of eukaryotic cells. The increase of PA in malignant and proliferating cells attracted the interest of scientists during last decades, addressing PA depletion as a new
