General description

Insulin is secreted by the islet β cells in the pancreas. It contains two peptide chains linked by disulfide bridges. The A chain is composed of 21 amino acids and the B chain has 30 amino acids.

Application

Rat/Mouse Insulin ELISA is suitable for measuring and quantifying insulin levels in metabolism and endocrine research. It has been used to determine plasma insulin by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. It has also been used to measure the insulin secretion from cells, in vitro.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Insulin is a key hormone that maintains normal blood glucose levels. It mediates cellular glucose uptake, controls carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism, and enhances cell division and growth through its mitogenic effects. Insulin resistance is a condition of impaired sensitivity to insulin-mediated glucose disposal.
