General description

A synthetic zwitterionic detergent, which unlike other amphoteric surfactants, retains its zwitterionic character over a broad pH range (CMC: 330 mM). This property is attributed to both the presence of a strongly basic quaternary ammonium ion and an acidic sulfonate ion of equal strength. This ionic balance presumably prevents irreversible binding to either anionic or cationic compounds.

Application

  • Use of a zwitterionic detergent for the restoration of the antibody binding capacity of immunoblotted Francisella tularensis lipopolysaccharide.: This study explores the application of Zwittergent 3-08 detergent in the restoration of antibody binding capacity to lipopolysaccharides of Francisella tularensis, enhancing the immunoblotting technique. This finding is significant for biochemical assays involving bacterial lipopolysaccharides (Fulop et al., 1992, DOI).

  • The effect of zwitterionic detergents on the extraction and functional properties of cartilage proteoglycans.: This research demonstrates how Zwittergent 3-08 detergent affects the extraction and functionality of cartilage proteoglycans, providing insights into its potential uses in cartilage biochemistry and proteoglycan studies (Byers et al., 1987, PubMed).

  • Characterization of covalently cross-linked pancreatic somatostatin receptors.: This paper describes the use of Zwittergent 3-08 detergent in characterizing pancreatic somatostatin receptors, highlighting its role in receptor biochemistry and cross-linking studies (Susini et al., 1986, PubMed).
