General description

Ceramide is a bioactive sphingolipid. C18 Ceramide (d17:1/18:0) is synthesized by the N-acylation of sphingosine. This reaction is catalyzed by ceramide synthase 1 (CerS1). C18 Ceramide is highly expressed in brain tissues.

Application

C18 Ceramide (d17:1/18:0) has been used as an internal standard in mass spectrometer and ultra high performance Liquid Chromatography for quantitative measurement of ceramides in muscle.

Biochem/physiol Actions

C18 Ceramide has an ability to induce cell death. Defects in the generation or accumulation of C18 Ceramide has been associated with the development of human head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC).
