General description

β-Galactosylceramides (GalCers) or cerebrosides are synthesized from the glycosphingolipids by or β-GalCer synthase. They are localized in cytosolic face cell membrane after synthesis from Golgi and endoplasmic reticulum. GalCers are present in the brain and myelin structures.

Application

C24:1 Galactosyl(β) Ceramide (d18:1/24:1(15Z)) is suitable for use
  • as a standard hexosylceramide for hydrophilic interaction chromatography-based liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy
  • as a lipid standard in ozone-induced dissociation mass spectrometry
  • in lipid nanotubes (LNT) preparation in combination with phosphatidylserine

Biochem/physiol Actions

β-Galactosylceramides (GalCers) levels are elevated in Krabbe′s disease due to the galactosylceramidase enzyme deficiency. High levels of nervonic acid-containing ceramide (d18:1/24:1) is associated with aging.
