General description

Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are the building blocks of eukaryotic membranes. PC is an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon and is a strong bilayer-forming lipid.

Application

TopFluor® PC has been used as a component in the for fluorescent studies using small unilamellar vesicles. It has also been used in the preparation of unilamellar phospholipid liposomes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance. It is used to treat fat embolism.
